After about the sixth explosion, Albus believes it might finally be time to admit defeat.

“I think we have to face the facts, Gellert,” he says, as he makes his way across the tiny kitchen to crack open a window. “There may only be eleven uses for dragon’s blood.”

He waves his wand in a rough figure-eight pattern, attempting to siphon out at least some of the thick black smoke that’s issuing from the cauldron.

Gellert slams his fist down on the table, making their instruments rattle. His face is streaked with soot and his hair is dark with sweat, standing up slightly in the back. All in all, he looks quite mad. Utterly brilliant and undeniably handsome, but still quite mad.

“We’ll crack it, Albus!” Gellert insists. “We will. We just have get the components right.” He reaches for the vial of dragon’s blood, the one they’d saved up for months to buy.

Albus puts a hand over his. “Gilbert.” His fingers are smooth and shockingly warm. Gellert looks up and blinks at him, surprised.

“We’ve got all summer,” Albus tells him, though he can feel his cheeks heating up. He isn’t really sure what he meant by grabbing his hand. “No need to rush. Besides, your aunt’ll have our heads if she comes home to find the kitchen like this.”

For a moment, Gellert looks angry, eyes wide and intense. Then it’s gone, and he smiles.

“You’re right, Albus. Of course.”

Neither of them wants a repeat of last time, when Gellert’s aunt had come home to find them attempting to charm a divan into dancing the waltz with an easy chair. She had shouted about how they were ruining the house, and about how sixteen-year old wizards should be out racing broomsticks and meeting young witches.

Gellert’s hand is still in his.

“Come on then,” Albus says brightly, making to pull away. Gellert’s grip just tightens. “What’s—?”

Gellert leans across the wreckage of their experiment and kisses him. Up close he smells of sweat and sulfur and magic, the slightly acidic tang of dragon’s blood. His lips are chapped, but Albus doesn’t think he can recall feeling anything so perfect.

Gellert’s mouth opens warm and soft against his, sending shivers running up and down Albus’ spine. He puts a hand to his cheek, cupping his jaw, sliding up to thread fingers in his hair. Gellert laughs, pulling back, eyes glittering with the same sort of excitement they hold before he suggests one of his daft plans, the ones that involve things like changing the world and building a better tomorrow. Becoming more powerful than anyone before them.

“Let’s get this cleared away,” he says, softly, putting a stopper in the dragon’s blood. “We’ve got all summer.”

It came out of fucking nowhere, except for all the ways it was just waiting to happen. What they liked, what they wanted hardly entered into Brian's head, and Rome sure as fuck didn't think about until the first time someone called them on how tight they were.

No, that first time, when it happened, it was just the way things were supposed to go, the hammer coming down and letting loose all the octane in their blood. Brian's win, the cold sweat of if they were going to pull it off, and the cruise in the new car they had both put their blood and sweat into all faded to nothing in the moment their mouths came tight in, teeth clinking with inexperience, and then there was nothing but Rome, Rome's body, Rome's hands, and the vinyl of the seat he was pinned to.

The very first time, it was an accident. Hotch had been leaning over Reid to look at a file, Reid had looked up at him, and Hotch, possessed by the same impulse that had driven him to try out for the Pirates of Penzance in college (worst fourth pirate in history, but it caught Haley's attention), had dropped a soft kiss to Dr. Spencer Reid's forehead. Reid recovered first, blushing softly and quickly redirecting Hotch's attention to some detail in their case. Both of them, Hotch was certain, had never been more grateful for the fact that they were staying late, alone, in the office that night. No one had seen it.

That had been shortly before the divorce, before Gideon had left, before everything had changed. Gideon's disappearance had shaken Reid to the core, and Hotch was doing little more than going through the motions as he sorted out his own issues. Everything had finally culminated in the Chester Hardwick interview though. Reid had backed away as far as he dared, even as Hotch had encouraged the posturing, desperate for some sort of confrontation, some way to blow off the stress of Haley's constant pressuring.

Then Reid had opened his mouth, and it really dawned on Supervisory Special Agent Aaron Hotchner that he was risking not only his own life, but Reid's. Something cold washed over him, made him grip the tie he'd snatched off earlier so tightly that his knuckles hurt. He had no right to place someone as sensitive as Reid in that position. He was supposed to protect Reid, to keep him as far removed from the physical dangers of their job as was possible.

The bitter taste had only become more prominent when Reid confessed quietly in the car, "I find I do some of my best work under intense terror." He grinned slightly, trying to laugh it off, trying to hide how much he was shaking as he shuffled the papers around, tucking them back into the proper folders.

Hotch gripped the steering wheel a little more tightly, apologized, and finally made the decision to admit the real reason for his stress. "So, Haley wants me to sign the divorce papers uncontested so nobody wastes money on lawyers." He didn't have to tell Reid, didn't have to open this topic. He shot a very quick glance over at the other profiler.

Reid swallowed, carefully looked away, and asked in a neutral tone, "You don't want to?"

"What I want, I'm not going to go get," Hotch replied, looking straight ahead at the road. He was avoiding the question, not sure of the answer himself. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Reid nod. The young doctor was probably trying to figure out what to say, what Hotch might be leading up to. Reid didn't know that Hotch had antagonized Haley the same way he had Chester Hardwick. He had pressed and pressed, at first without realizing what he was doing, and then with the grim determination of a man who had already lost everything. He didn't want Haley any more (the spark in their marriage had died the moment he admitted that his team needed him), but he did want Jack.

He pulled over at the first diner they saw, parked in the far corner of the small lot, and sighed. Reid fidgeted for a minute, then finally reached out a hand and touched one of his arms. "Hotch..."

"It's..." Hotch swallowed, keeping his hands on the steering wheel. He was going to break in front of a member of his team, in front of someone that he'd sworn to keep at arm's length. "I'm fine." That hand on his arm squeezed just a little, and Hotch glanced over toward Reid when he heard the seat belt unbuckling. The young doctor leaned over, closing the space between them. Hotch had enough time to stop him; he knew what was coming. And so help him, he didn't move, scarcely breathed. The featherlight touch of Reid's lips against his own was sweeter than he expected. Did this make it their first kiss, or were they supposed to count Hotch's earlier indiscretion?

For just a heartbeat, he was perfectly still, his hands squeezing the steering wheel a fraction more, then he yielded. He let the car go, reached up and buried his fingers in that soft hair, scratching at Reid's scalp very lightly with the tips of his fingers. Hotch was demanding-- he always had been-- as he pulled Reid closer, as he deepened the kiss. Reid made a very soft noise into his mouth but didn't struggle, didn't fight. He yielded, soft and pliant under Hotch's mouth, one of his hands sliding up Hotch's arm to touch his shoulder, the other fumbling for the seat belt, even as Hotch coaxed him closer. The moment waxed to full, stretched a little more, then slowly waned as they pulled away, Hotch carefully beginning to disentangle himself from his subordinate.

Reid must have sensed that there was more to Hotch's movements than just repositioning, because he leaned forward a little, touched his forehead to Hotch's as he whispered softly, his voice shaking, "Don't even try to tell me that this won't happen again." His eyes lifted from Hotch's lips to lock gazes. "I want this, Aaron."

Aw. I was basically about to write a longer version of this, but this is so sweet and wonderful that now I can't. ;)

The tiny lump that presses in on his chest leaves him feeling even more fragile than she looks, though. He never expected to make this mistake twice in his career.

I love this line. Mulder's emotional fragility is one of the things I love about him--that he feels things deeply, when they matter to him, and is capable of being shaken by them

Edge's shoulders hit the mat and his breath leaves him in a huff, but Crowe doesn't relax yet -- not until Edge actually goes limp under him and lets go of his arms. "Damnit," Edge says. "You win. Again."

"It was a good match," Crowe says. Edge never goes easy on him, never lets him just coast to a victory, and he's grateful for that. It makes him push himself, makes him better.

"Don't try to flatter me," Edge says. "It'll be a good match when I beat you."

Crowe grins. "I bet it will," he says. He hasn't moved yet. Lately doing close-quarters training with Edge has gotten a lot more interesting than it used to be, and he's enjoying the contact. The pink flush across Edge's cheeks from the exertion is pretty good, too, to be honest.

Edge glares up at him suspiciously, but all he says is, "What?" instead of telling Crowe to move.

"Nothing," Crowe says, shaking his head, but that's not quite what he means. "Well, maybe one thing." And he leans down, trying his best to be casual about it, for a kiss.

Edge tenses up for a second in surprise, but he does kiss back -- awkward enough that it's pretty clear he won't be able to tell how much Crowe is bluffing here. His lips part, and he makes a soft noise in his throat when Crowe takes the opportunity to slip his tongue between them. Their teeth click together once, jarring, but Crowe just tilts his head a little further and it doesn't happen again. Edge's hands come up and clench in the back of his shirt. Crowe threads his fingers through Edge's sweat-damp hair and kisses deeper.

They'll have to stop soon. Somebody else could come try to use the gym any time. And when they do, Crowe's sure things will get awkward again. But right now -- right now, as Edge pushes up toward him, trying to get even closer than they are -- they're doing great.

That's actually my favorite pair of lines in the ficlet. *laughs* It was a lot of fun to write this; kept re-watching the Hotch and Reid pieces of that episode to try to capture the feel of it.

I almost literally could not believe this request got filled. Thank you! It fills me with warm and fluttery feelings. I love that the kiss is not quite romantic. And Bluebeard is a great choice for driving Red to extra axe-crazy.

Her master can get more gossip in an hour with a grin, a few coins, and a bottle of baiju than a trained spymaster could overhear in a week, and his information is probably good.
Ling's goofball badassery is the best. I love how they are here - still dedicated and scheming, but with that one little indulgence which Lanfan has to kind of snap even to take. But she really needs to learn to make use of Ling's deficient sense of propriety.
