...I left this pretty ambiguous on purpose, so it...is as pre-game as you want it to be. XD

The hour has grown late; Van has stayed too long in the Fabres' house, between the responsibilities he cannot avoid and those he will not shirk. His ship waits for him, down in the port, and the captain likely won't be happy with him for the delay, and the poor tide they'll have trying to leave.

He hears footsteps in the hallway behind him as he nears the front door -- not a servant's measured tread, but the undisciplined, hurried rush of the young master of the house. Van turns.

"Master Van!" Luke says, stumbling to a halt almost inside arm's reach. He's in his nightclothes, barefoot, his hair even more wild than usual. "You're leaving already?"

Van has one smile he saves only for Luke, patient and warm; he gives Luke that smile now, reaching out to lay a hand on the boy's shoulder. "I'm afraid so," he says. "I'd like to be able to stay longer, but my duties can't wait."

Luke's hopeful face crumples. "It's not fair," he says. "You're always leaving. You can never stay long enough."

He really can't afford more time, or they'll have to wait for the next turning of the tide. "I am sorry, Luke," he says. He slides his hand up, cups Luke's cheek in his palm. "I would stay if I could."

"But who'll teach me?" Luke says. "You said I was getting better, but if you're not here --"

Van leans down and stops the protest with a kiss, pressing his mouth to Luke's. The words are lost; Luke's eyes go wide. His lips offer no resistance, and he makes a tiny sound of shock as Van takes his mouth.

Whatever argument he wanted to make is gone by the time Van pulls back. It's an inelegant method, but Luke doesn't seem to do well with subtlety. "Practice hard," Van says, "and I'll be back as soon as I can."

He leaves before Luke can find the breath to argue further.
