FILLED - Different Sorts of Beauty

There were two kinds of fireworks one could experience in Midgar, segregated, like so many things in that metropolis, by class- articulated more specifically by where one found oneself living in relation to the plate.

Aerith was one of the few who had seen, and more importantly, enjoyed both.

Under the plate, there wasn't much sky to speak of. Any of the bright, bursting stars of light that rocketed up into the air were a fire hazard for not only the slums below, but the trains and the wiring between and above. Filling this night sky with color would look more like a terrorist attack than a light-hearted celebration. Down in the lower city, if you didn't want any trouble, sparklers and snakes, those flashy sorts of crackling flares that rushed with fire and popped along the ground, were a fixture of children's summer celebrations.

Elmira would allow her daughter to purchase just two (one for each of them) each Midsummer's Day. They were careful to keep the sparks from reaching the garden. Aerith jumped and giggling, delighted by a one with a greenish glow. Something about that light seemed familiar. It resonated with memories buried deep in her blood.


The larger fireworks, nearly perfected to the degree of being able to spell out the name of the Shinra Company in the sky, were a frequent extravagance on the upper plate. Aerith had seen them in the company of Tseng. She had been frightened at first by the size of the sound. It reminded her of gunshots.

"It must sound muted beneath the plate," Tseng mused, squeezing her hand to calm her, "Look up, Aerith."

Her wide eyes dashed to the sky and her lips parted in awe at the show painted there. It was as if the homey sparklers were puddles and this overpowered bonanza was the ocean. "It's part of the official celebration of the president's son's birthday."

"It's beautiful," Aerith gaped. But all the wonder that the Shinra Company could engineer did nothing to diminish her joy in the semi-legal neighborhood poppers.

Notes: My first time writing in this fandom. A few details informed by Spartacus: Gods of the Arena but no major spoilers.

Glorious.

Like Venus herself, blasphemy as that thought was. Regal and proud. Lucretia was not the most finely dressed woman here today. She was not the youngest. She was, possibly, one of the most beautiful though he'd seen more beautiful in his day. Yet there was an aura about her, a noble bearing, an inner strength that radiated from her.

She wasn't of a noble enough family that his father would approve of his sudden and unexplained attraction to her, but Batiatus paid no heed to thoughts of filial impropriety and the future. He focussed instead on catching her attention, trying to win her with words. He showered her with flowery compliments and made gentle jests at which she laughed politely.

In turn she charmed him; she was intelligent and insightful. A wife would be expected to run his household, but a pretty face could compensate for an empty head, and well-trained staff could manage with barely a nudge from their Dominia. Yet Lucretia would be both charismatic and competent in all the affairs of home and business.

His father interrupted them, finally, and Batiatus left her side reluctantly. He wanted more time to speak with this woman who had captivated him so utterly. He would always want more.

He'd always thought marriage would be acceptable – rather than desirable - when the right prospect presented itself, that he'd be content with a woman not unseemly, one who'd be a suitable wife and, ultimately mother of his children. Now he saw a chance to have something more from the union, a personal connection, a genuine affection, a true helpmate.

Lucretia was flattered by his attentions. Batiatus was from a more noble family than she ought to aspire to marrying into. Batiatus himself - well, he was a little on the skinny side, a little too eager and forthright than was strictly proper, and he wasn't a military man as she'd always imagined she might make a match with.

It was almost too foolish to contemplate it, but contemplate a match with Batiatus she did. She would have to adjust her ideas about the society she would mix in. She would have to be more interested in the Games than she'd ever been before - a brutal world even outside of the arena, or so she'd heard.

He'd spoken to her with wit though, and not underestimated her own intellect. He'd even kept his eyes mostly on her face throughout their conservation. His father – disapproval evident at his son's inexplicable attraction to this woman who ought to be beneath his notice – was another matter.

Still, Lucretia thought, sipping at her wine and watching Batiatus be introduced to some simpering young maiden - his lack of interest was plain despite his outward efforts to remain polite - she could do much worse, and would unlikely do much better. It wasn't as if she'd ever expected to marry for love, after all. And perhaps in time she would come to care for him; only the gods knew the future.

Somebody or something seeded Daniel Jackson clones throughout North America in the mid-1960s. One wound up a rogue spy-wrangler, one an alchemist artist in Oregon, one an underworld courier with a radiation-shielding abdominal pouch, one a Justice League superhero, one a member of the Sacrament Lutheran Militia in Blue Earth, Minnesota. Maybe Daniel finds out about them and investigates further in a 'there but for X, Y and Z' character-study piece, maybe they join forces to foil the evil plans of whoever did this, maybe they're thrown together by some other twist of fate or plot, maybe they never meet but the data is critical to a framework story; maybe Daniel wasn't the only gateverse character copied and seeded. Humor or angst or plotty action-adventure, mostly I'd just love to read a gonzo multi-crossover fic where a bunch of characters played by the same actor turn out to have started as genetically identical people, and then stuff happened, and now it all connects back up.
