FILLED: The Divide (rated G)

Note: Probably not what was being asked for, really, but it's what popped out.

The boy shyly holds out his hands for Frodo's and, not knowing what else to do, Frodo gives it to him. He lets Sam kiss his hand, as if Frodo's a prince from an old wives' tale.

He regrets it immediately. He didn't come to Hobbiton to be a prince. He didn't give the boy the toy boat as charity. In Buckland, young Frodo was just a gentlehobbit among many. Here in Hobbiton, where most hobbits can't afford to sit around in libraries at planting time, it's different. Princes don't get to make friends with the paupers.

"Thank you, Mr Frodo," Sam says obediently.

"There's a good lad," says old Hamfast. He pats Sam's head as the child backs away.

Frodo swallows regret and goes back inside to hide in the study, leaving the father and son to their gardening.
